How it works

The process is simple. The Unit team helps you every step of the way.

Step 1

Accept an invite to an existing union or create a new one.

After entering your union, you can share feedback about your workplace and discuss solutions.

Invite your coworkers to your union.

Unit provides tools for you to share invites over email, SMS, or your favorite chat app.

Sign your digital union election petition.

When enough coworkers have signed the petition, the Unit team will work with you to schedule your election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Vote "Yes" in the NLRB election in person or by mail to certify your union.

The majority of people who vote need to vote "Yes". Your boss may try to discourage you.

A labor union is an organized group of workers who come together to improve and/or protect their workplace.

Legally, being a member of a labor union means your company must negotiate certain workplace issues with your union. Unions are required by law to be democratic, so as a member of a union you have a voice in how it operates.

A labor union gives you a voice and protects your right to negotiate with management. A labor union can bargain with management to:

  • Create transparent processes for raises and promotions
  • Improve benefits
  • Implement best practices, such as employee/manager feedback
  • Ensure the provision and use of safety equipment and procedures
  • Implement processes to deal with harassment and other complaints quickly and respectfully
  • Regulate scheduling and time-planning so workers do not feel overworked and can plan their lives
  • Provide stability and protect against unexpected layoffs

Not on this list? As long as it is related to your job or workplace conditions, you can still probably improve it with a union.

Companies change over time. Creating a union will help ensure your workplace stays awesome even if your boss leaves or is replaced.

You get a voice in how your union negotiates and what it negotiates for, including on raises and standardizing pathways to promotions.

Union members pay dues, typically through automatic payroll deduction. These dues go toward compensating union representatives, organizing meetings, providing workers with information and help, and paying legal and administrative vendors. The typical cost of national union dues is 1.5% of your wages. For example, if you make $40k/year, you would pay about $50 per month.

With your own union, you will set your own dues. If you use Unit to run a union, we charge a monthly fee based on your wages.

Unions were fairly popular in the United States throughout the 1900s until about the 1970s. Their decline in popularity can be explained by a number of factors including legislation that made it harder for workers to unionize, changes in the workplace, and national benefits won by unions, such as the 5-day work week and the minimum wage. Unions continue to remain very popular in Europe. In countries such as Sweden and Norway, over 50% of workers are members of unions!

Many people are familiar with unions through the work of union federations like the AFL-CIO or large unions such as the NEA, SEIU, and UAW. National unions often have chapters all across the country. However, they are just one example of how a union can be structured.

An independent union means you and your coworkers will vote to decide everything that happens in the union. Unit makes that easier through digital voting and communication tools. An independent union has all the same legal rights as a national union.

Decide a national union is best for you? An independent union is free to vote at any time to affiliate with an accepting national union.

An independent union represents a smaller group of people (you and your coworkers), and therefore 100% of your dues and work go toward your workplace, focusing on challenges specific to your organization and location.

Additionally, you will have access to the Unit app, which helps you and your coworkers conveniently run your union with any smartphone or computer. Unit advisors can answer any questions the computers can’t.

National unions have long-established procedures and infrastructure, and they can leverage their large existing membership to bring pressure against employers and support local unions. Major national unions include NEA, SEIU, RWDSU, and UAW.

As more unions use Unit, they will also be able to work together to achieve more than they can alone.

There are several laws, including the NLRA and LMRDA, that govern how a labor union must be run and the reports that a labor union needs to send to the government. Unit handles those for you.
